The Western Ghats is one of the important and most sensitive biodiversity hotspots in India. It is indeed an important and noteworthy step to declare Chandoli national park and Koyna wildlife as “Sahyadri Tiger Reserve”. This will lead to the conservation of unique habitats and its biodiversity. The Western Ghats are rich in diversity of flora and fauna and many species are endemic to this region. The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve is an important catchment areas of many fresh water streams and major rivers. River Warana and river Koyana originate from thus region. Koyana dam and Chandoli dam are built on this rivers of which former is an important hydroelectric project and later irrigates agriculture landscape in the South western Maharashtra.
