Karnala Bird Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Raigad district. Is an either side of the Mumbai-Goa highway located about 12 kms. Fromcity of Panvel. The age old karnala fort with a tank up there is known to host a variety of birds. Karnala has two distinct seasons from the point of views of the bird-watcher. At the onset of rains, one can see the paradise flycatcher with its fairy like white streamers, the shama or the magpie robin and the Malabar whisteling thrush which are some of the most melodious avian songster. A variety of other birds is also seen nesting in the forest. The racket tailed drongo also nest here. Its skill in the air and felicity to mimic the call of other birds make it a favorite amongst bird-watchers. The golden backed woodpecker and the heart spotted woodpecker are rather uncommon. Two rare birds Ashy Minivet and Spotted-heart woodpeckers have been sighted here.
